As a seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience, Dave's journey in the printing industry is a testament to his passion, innovation, and dedication to both his craft and his colleagues.

Dave was recently featured in the summer edition of Craftopics from the Detroit Club of Printing House Craftsmen, Inc. Since its establishment in 1921, the Detroit Club of Printing House Craftsmen has been a club of people in the printing industry brought together to share fellowship and education.

A Passion for Printing from the Start

Dave's journey began in high school when he enrolled in a Printing Technologies course offered through his technical education program, then known as SEOVEC. This course exposed him to all facets of the printing industry, including silkscreen, bindery, and typesetting. Inspired by a passionate teacher, Dave quickly realized that printing was not just a profession but an art form he was eager to explore.

"I was fortunate to have a teacher that was encouraging to me, and you could sense his level of enthusiasm for the art of the industry," Dave recalls. This early exposure set the foundation for a career that would span decades, with Dave taking on various roles such as Production Manager, Estimator, Machine Operator, and Customer Service Manager.

Milestones of a Distinguished Career

Dave's career at Hatteras, where he has spent the last 19 years, is marked by numerous achievements that reflect his leadership and dedication. Starting in customer support, Dave quickly became involved in estimating, where he excelled. By 2016, he was instrumental in implementing and training the team on a new Print Management Information System (MIS), showcasing his ability to adapt and lead in a technology-driven industry.

In 2018, Dave was promoted to Production Manager, a role in which he has thrived. His commitment to ensuring projects are scheduled and delivered on time has repeatedly contributed to Hatteras' success. In 2020, Dave took on the responsibility for the company's large format division, learning all the equipment on his own and leading some of the company's most successful large format projects to date.

"I enjoy making dreams and visions come to life through designing," Dave says. His efforts have not only increased production efficiency and reduced costs but have also positioned Hatteras as a leader in the industry. Dave's mentorship of new hires is another testament to his dedication as he works to inspire the next generation of print professionals.

Industry Insights and Trends

As someone who has witnessed the rapid advancement of technology in the printing industry, Dave has valuable insights into the trends shaping its future. After 30-plus years in the industry, Dave says, “I have seen technology advance to levels we never thought possible in the 1980s”. He highlights the growth of digital printing, driven by the demand for short print runs, variable data printing, and quick turnaround times. According to Dave, innovations in printing technology are enabling faster production times without compromising on quality, making it essential for professionals in the industry to stay updated on the latest advancements.

"The ability to think creatively and offer unique solutions can set you apart," Dave advises. He emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, hands-on experience, and networking within the industry. Dave's advice is clear for those aspiring to succeed in printing: stay open to new ideas, embrace innovation, and never stop learning.

Life Beyond the Printing Press

While Dave's professional life is undoubtedly impressive, he also values his time outside of work, especially with his family. With two grown children, three grandsons, and a recently expanded family through his marriage to his wife Kari, Dave cherishes the moments spent with loved ones. Whether it's traveling to bucket-list destinations like Iceland and France or enjoying outdoor activities, Dave finds joy in life beyond the printing press.

"I also enjoy watching football, playing in my fantasy football league, and most all outdoor activities," Dave shares.
