USPS's New Leadership and the Road Ahead

Change is coming to the U.S. Postal Service. David Steiner is expected to officially assume the role of Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service (USPS) in July 2025, pending the successful completion of background and ethics checks.

Steiner was appointed the 76th Postmaster General by the USPS Board of Governors on May 9, 2025. He will succeed Acting Postmaster General Doug Tulino. In a statement regarding his appointment, Steiner expressed his commitment to the USPS's mission:

“It is an incredible honor to be asked to lead the world’s greatest postal organization, with a history that stretches back before the founding of the United States.”

The USPS has had some difficult years recently. From significant delays to a financial loss of $3.3 billion in the second quarter of 2025, and an outdated infrastructure, there’s no shortage of problems to solve.

While no specific plans have been made public, based on his background as the former CEO of Waste Management and a board member at FedEx, there will be a focus on operational efficiency and financial sustainability. He has expressed a commitment to maintaining the USPS's role as an independent establishment of the executive branch. He plans to resign from the FedEx board to avoid conflicts of interest. Steiner will oversee the continuation of the USPS's "Delivering for America" plan to modernize postal operations through various measures, such as launching offerings competing with FedEx and UPS, overhauling transportation processes, and improving service.
