4 Big Changes to the USPS in 2025

Featured Image

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is implementing big changes in 2025 as part of its "Delivering for America" plan. The USPS is trying to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve service reliability. I've compiled the four big changes I have found so far:

1. Adjustments to Mail Delivery Standards

Effective April 1, 2025, USPS is refining service standards for various mail categories, including first-class mail, magazines, marketing mail, and packages. While the one-to-five-day delivery window for First-Class Mail remains, approximately 14% of this mail will experience faster delivery times, and about 11% may see slight delays. USPS believes these changes will save USPS at least $36 billion over the next decade by optimizing transportation and improving operations.

2. Introduction of New Mailing Promotions and Incentives

In 2025, USPS is launching a series of promotions designed to enhance customer engagement and response rates. These include the "Integrated Technology" promotion, which encourages the incorporation of emerging technologies into mailpieces, and the "Tactile, Sensory, and Interactive Mailpiece Engagement" promotion, which focuses on innovative physical features.

3. We Will Pay More for Shipping

The price of some services will increase.

  • Priority Mail prices will go up by 3.2%. With this option, packages typically arrive in one to three business days.

  • Priority Mail Express prices will also increase by 3.2%. This quicker shipping option usually delivers in one to two days and guarantees overnight delivery to some destinations.

  • USPS Ground Advantage prices will rise by 3.9%. This option can be less expensive, but delivery can take two to five business days.

  • Parcel Select prices will jump by 9.2%. Mainly used by businesses for bulk shipments, Parcel Select's delivery varies by shipping zone but is typically two to eight days.

4. One-Ounce Postage Rates May Increase

The USPS plans to raise postage rates in July 2025, following a period of no increases in January 2025.  The USPS anticipates further increases in January 2026 and July 2027. We currently do not know how much the increase could be.
